COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – Michelle Root, the mother of Sarah Root, released the below statement in response to Jim Mowrer, after he refused to support David Young’s bipartisan bill “Sarah’s Law.”
Jim Mowrer refused multiple times during a debate last night on IPTV to support Sarah’s Law, a bipartisan bill co-authored by David Young.
“Sarah’s Law is really common sense, and I don’t understand how anyone wouldn’t back it. Mr. Mowrer, please help me understand your reasoning behind not supporting Sarah’s Law,” Mrs. Root said. “All Sarah’s Law states is that if an illegal alien causes death or serious bodily injury they should be detained by [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement]. I just assumed that was already in place, but boy was I wrong. The other thing I was wrong about was ICE having to give us — the victim’s family — information about the accused. Again, in my personal opinion, this is just common sense.”
Sarah Root was tragically killed by a drunk driver in January 2016. The driver, who was in the country illegally, was released on bail and predictably fled the country, avoiding prosecution for manslaughter. Sarah’s Law requires the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to take custody of an illegal immigrant charged with a crime resulting in death or serious injury.
Rep. David Young is the bill’s lead Republican sponsor in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Thank you, David Young, for being a voice for my daughter,” Mrs. Root said. “We truly appreciate all you have done and are doing for our family and Sarah. God bless you.”
